RTR: What inspired you to be a writer?
RTR: How long does it usually take you to write a book?
Marlene: I write the first draft as quickly as I can and that can take anywhere from a few months to a year. But it really depends on the book. Each one is different and the process is different. I don’t have a day job any longer and that means I have more time to write, which has been a great gift.
RTR: What is your guilty pleasure?
Marlene: Coffee, although I don’t really feel guilty about it. And television/movies.
RTR: What was your favorite book as a teen?
RTR: What was your favorite book as a teen?
Marlene: Oh, gosh, maybe CATCHER IN THE RYE, FOREVER by Judy Blume, or LORD OF THE RINGS. I’ve always loved to read, so it’s hard to pin down one novel. I also adored Madeleine L’Engle’s WRINKLE IN TIME.
RTR: If you could have lunch with anyone, alive or dead, who would you choose and why?
Marlene:My mother, who died several years ago. Or Louisa May Alcott. On the living side, I’d like to have lunch with Joss Whedon or Judy Blume.
RTR: How long did it take you to get your first book published?
Marlene: I think about three years. I wrote it in six months and then revised it multiple times. But then I had to get an agent, etc. After I found an agent, he sold it in a couple of months.
RTR: What are your favorite songs currently on your iPod?
Marlene: I am really loving this song called The Fine Art of Poisoning by Jill Tracy right now, but I also just discovered Joe Bonamassa’s work and I’ve been playing his song LAST KISS a lot. I’m in love with Codeine Velvet Club’s entire album. And The Shin’s cover of GOODBYE GIRL. I always create a playlist for every novel, but I WILL FOLLOW YOU INTO THE DARK by Death Cab for Cutie ends up in a lot of my playlists. I’ve found that both the TRUE BLOOD soundtracks and the TWILIGHT soundtracks always have great songs. And I’m a big Gleek (GLEE fan) so I have all those songs on my iPod too. And Oingo Boingo’s WE CLOSE OUR EYES is a song I never get tired of.
RTR: In the Dead is…. series which character do you most associate yourself with?
Marlene: Daisy, of course. She’s one of my favorite characters too, because although we have a few things in common, she’s very different from me, too. She is the youngest and so am I. But I’m not psychic and I don’t cook. I get all my cooking ideas for the DEAD IS books from my husband, who is an excellent cook. Daisy’s sisters. And Ryan. And I love Flo, because I think she’s so snarky, but with a good heart. And my villains in the DEAD IS series always make me giggle. Oh, gosh. I’m kind of sad right now because I just turned in the last DEAD IS book and I will miss everyone from Nightshade so much! There’s a Welcome to Nightshade! community page on Facebook and I would love to hear from my fans there.
RTR: Where did you get the idea for the psychic jukebox, Lil?

RTR: Where did you get the idea for the psychic jukebox, Lil?
Marlene: I love music and wanted to be able to include songs in some way. My husband is a huge Twilight Zone fan and we watch whenever there’s a Twilight Zone marathon on TV. There’s also this Twilight Zone episode where a guy is stuck in a town (William Shatner) and he keeps asking questions of this fortune-telling machine and that inspired me to think of my clue-spewing jukebox.
RTR: What is favorite book in the Dead is…. series so far and why?
Marlene: The first one, DEAD IS THE NEW BLACK, and the last one DEAD IS NOT AN OPTION. Because I love beginnings and ends.
Thank you Marlene and we can’t wait for Dead is Just a Rumor.
