Gru is an evil villain who all his life has tried to impress his mother.  His biggest dream was to travel to the moon and his mom shot down every idea he ever had to get there.  He has finally figured out a way to get the moon, but when he approaches the bank for a loan they quickly shoot him down saying that his past plans haven’t worked and there are younger and more eligible villains fit to steal the moon.  They bring up the guy that had just stolen one of the pyramids and how maybe he should retire from being evil.  He begs them asking what he could do to make them change their minds and they tell him that if he can come up with the shrink ray to make the moon smaller then they will give him the money to build a spaceship. Gru soon sets off to find a shrink ray and when he does it quickly gets stolen away from him by Vector.  Vector is his rival villain who is also trying to steal the moon.  Gru then tries to do everything in his power to get the shrink ray.  Along the way he meets 3 little girls (Margo, Agnes and Edith) who are trying to sell cookies and raise money for their orphanage.  When Gru realizes that they have sold some cookies to Vector he realizes that they could get him the shrink ray.  He adopts the girls and is happier than ever because now all his dreams are going to come true, that is until he realizes how hard it is to raise children.

What We Think

I saw this movie the other day with Dream and couldn’t be more excited.  All year I have been seeing commercials for this movie and each time there was a new commercial I was practically jumping out of my seat.  As you can tell I was extremely excited for this movie.  After the movie I think that it about met my expectations, because although I was excited I knew that it wasn’t going to be all that amazing.  There were parts where it was extremely funny and there were parts when I glanced around the room.  The thing about those parts was though that every time I was glancing around the theater was when Margo (Miranda Cosgrove) was on.  The thing about her character was that you could completely tell that it was Miranda Cosgrove’s voice which was annoying because when you are an animated character you should at least attempt to do something different with your voice.  Her character also wasn’t very likable, but that might have been because the other two were just so much cuter.  Margo was also extremely pessimistic to things that she really shouldn’t have been and all-around irritating.  Other than that this movie was really funny and I really liked Gru and Steve Carell played/voiced him perfectly.  I don’t think there was a single time where I thought wow that is Steve Carell, more than half the time I was questioning whether or not it was actually him.  The best part of the movie by far was the minions, and even though you  couldn’t tell what they were saying their actions were really funny and in my eyes made the movie. Lastly, this movie is perfect for little kids but enjoyed by people of all ages!

So I went to the movie with the North Star and had pretty high expectations for it, considering I’d seen so many commercials over the few months before the movie actually came out. The commercials always included tiny yellow humanoids clad in cute little goggles. A.K.A minions. They made the commercials funny and really made me interested in the seeing the movie. And I must agree with the North Star that the minions really were a great touch to the movie. They couldn’t really talk, but their senseless babble was funny in its own way.  Again, I must agree that it was totally obvious that it was Miranda Cosgrove voicing Margo. I kinda wished she’s mixed things up a little. Made it so people had to really listen to know it was her voice. Like with Steve Carell and Julie Andrews. They both had weird accents that really spiced up the dialogue and the movie itself. Gru would have been a completely different and less interesting character if Steve Carell had voiced him differently. I really love how he played Gru. I kept laughing even when things weren’t that funny just because of the voicing. The plot of the movie itself was a little far-fetched (stealing the moon? Seriously?) but that was okay mostly because it was a kid’s movie. Also though because the reality of the three girls and how Gru’s life changes once he’s adopted them kind of makes up for the things that aren’t so realistic. The characters are also really likable in this movie. Gru was most definitely my favorite character because one moment he would be the most evil villain in history and the next he’d be supportive to the minions and the next he’d be the guardian of the three girls. He was just an all around good character. Unique and really funny. The three girls he adopts are all pretty realistic. Their dialogue is exactly what you would expect a little kid to say. Another thing that  thought  was a nice touch to the movie was the way Gru’s mother treated him as a kid. It really made me feel bad for the world-renowned villain which wasn’t expected. So props for that. Overall I thought the movie met my expectations but didn’t exceed them. Still, meeting my expectations is pretty good nowadays, for a movie, at least. When I came out of the movie theater I had a good idea of what I was going to give the movie, and my views haven’t changed since. I promised a friend I’d go see it with her and I actually wouldn’t mind seeing it again because I really did enjoy the movie. I think B+ borderline A- but I would recommend people of all ages see it for a good laugh and a good time.
