The Gist
Clary is just a normal teenager. She gets mad at her mom and goes out to clubs with her best friend Simon. She has a normal life with people who she loves and cares about. She has always felt like she was different though. So when she sees people that no one else can see she gets a little creeped out. Especially when she can’t stop thinking about the exceptionally good-looking one called Jace. This leads her into the world of shadow hunters and the careful balance between her old world and the world that is littered with magical creatures like vampires and werewolves. Jace and his friends are people who kill demons to keep the normal human world from being infested by slimy monsters from another world. As Clary embarks on this rather incredible journey, she learns about her true self, about the mortal instruments and about Valentine. Valentine is a Shadowhunter gone bad. He consorts with demons now, and believes that he is better than other downworlders such as Faeries and Vampires. He is the one person messing up the fragile balance between Shadowhunters and downworlders. While Clary discovers the truth about herself and her family she falls for Jace, the beautiful,”golden” Shadowhunter who has a tendency to be egotistical and cynical. This is the first book in the series about the mortal instruments.

I came across this book because it was only three dollars to buy at T.J. Maxx. I bought the whole series. I was a little iffy about reading it at first. I had started other books about demons and they hadn’t really caught on and held my attention. So you can see that I was a little hesitant. Then I started the book and I was starstruck. I couldn’t put it down and wanted to keep reading it wherever I went. The great thing about this book is that it isn’t gender specific. No books are gender specific really but most guys won’t lean towards girly romance novels. This book on the other hand has both guys and girls entranced by its unique and fantastical plot. I have to say that I was drawn into the history of the shadowhunters more than Stephanie Meyer’s Vampires. Jace even took his place above Edward on my list of most amazing guy characters. He is sweet and sexy, mysterious and dark, and the doting boyfriend all in one. He is described as “golden”, he has golden hair, golden skin and Clary describes him as being very muscular. Just to sum it up this boy is a total babe, and he knows. Clary and Jace had my heart from the beginning. Then there is Simon, the devoted best friend who is supposed to complete the ever famous love triangle. This book was action packed from the very beginning, and will forever hold your interest. Cassandra Clare does an excellent job of describing everything and making you feel like you are in the book. Sometimes I wish that I could live Clary’s life just for a day to experience what it would be like to live in Cassandra Clare’s amazing world.
