Charlie's Angels - ABC

Posted on 01:02 by Unknown
The Gist
Kate Prince, Eve French and Abby Sampson aren't saints.  A dirty cop, a car thief and a cat burglar, respectively, they all tangled with the law and lost.  And then they were given a second chance.  Charlie Townsend runs a detective agency in Miami, Florida, and he employs these three girls to work for him.  Talented, smart and gorgeous, they are a force to be reckoned with as they take down crime with the help of John Bosley, a computer hacker-turned-detective.  The four of them lay down the law under the orders of their always mysterious and never seen boss Charlie, and help people who have nowhere else to turn.  They're angels.

In a growing trend within the entertainment world to not be able to think of new or original concepts, this show is a remake of the old 1970's show Charlie's Angels.  Yes, the one with Farrah Fawcett.  The idea for the show is actually a good one.  Three girls gone bad who get a chance to go good again, and then kick butt and fight crime.  I know I wanted to be a crime fighting super spy when I was little, and part of me still does.  Unfortunately, this show does not live up to any expectations of anything.  At all.  In fact, it was cancelled after only seven episodes aired, it got such bad ratings.  The plot was pretty good, but like I said, it was a remake of an already-made show.  There's nothing original going on there, just the same thing that happened in the 70's, made with people who are considered attractive by today's standards, as opposed to the standards of the 70's.  Same old, same old.  The acting is sub-par at best.  I feel cliched saying that, but it's also true.  The actresses are all very pretty, but none of them are very deep.  They're better at standing and looking dramatic than they are at fighting.  There was one episode where one of the angels got beat on for a good three minutes, then just miraculously made a comeback and took the guy down.  That's realistic and believable.  Not really at all.  Also, the guy who plays Bosley?  Well, he's not a bad actor, but he's nothing like the real Bosley.  The original John Bosley was a rather large white man, who looked nerdy and awkward.  This John Bosely is a mildly attractive, young, hispanic guy.  He just isn't Bosley.  They cast him because he was good-looking, not because he fits the character.  He's the best actor on the show, but he shouldn't be on it.  Minka Kelly isn't a bad actor either, but her character is a little weird.  She was introduced in the first episode as the replacement to an 'angel' that is in only the first two minutes.  It's an awkward transition.

None of the plot lines are very exciting.  They aren't exactly boring, but there isn't anything that grabs the attention.  I've gotten up and left to make tea in the middle of an episode.  It just doesn't matter.  If a show claims to be an action-spy-type show, I expect something riveting.  I don't expect something that can serve as background noise to my tea-making.  It was also semi-predictable, and any show that can be even remotely predicted isn't fun.  The bad guy was obvious, or the action and fate of the characters was evident.  Dull.  Lame.  Don't care at all.  Charlie maintained his ever-present and very important mysteriousness, but it tried to bring his personal life into the show by plugging his family into the plot.  It didn't work at all.  I don't want to know about Charlie's life, because he isn't supposed to be a well-known or relatable character.  He is supposed to be removed, aloof almost, never showing his face or doing anything other than conversing with the angels and Bosley about cases, and congratulating them on a job well done.  No contact.  And yet, he's stuck right in there.  NO.  Not acceptable.  If you're going to remake a show, it has to at least try to follow the original version, and it absolutely HAS to get the details right.  This one just doesn't.  Details seem to be something lost on the current world of entertainment, and I'm so tired of it.  Please, get your head out of general concepts and remakes for two seconds and focus on expanding and deepening your ideas.  Of course, that won't happen.  I was born into an era of an entertainment holocaust, and while some people are going down swinging, most are just dying.  I'm so sick of it.  Ick.

This is not a good show.  I watched six of seven episodes, and I wasn't sure how much more I could take.  The characters were trying to develop, but it wasn't working.  None of the little details were working.  It all mixed up and spat back out some very poor television.  It's a good thing those actors are pretty.

iCarly- Nickelodeon

Posted on 17:53 by Unknown
The Gist

When 13-year-old Carly Shay and her best friend Sam Puckett are  forced to judge the talent show auditions they don’t believe life could get any worse.  That is until they start cracking jokes at the auditions and getting it all accidentally recorded on camera.  They soon post their jokes on splashface.com (their version of YouTube) and get people demanding more of Carly and Sam.  Intrigued by the idea Carly, Sam and Freddie (Carly’s other best friend, who is hopelessly in love with her) put together a web-show titled iCarly.  Carly and Sam as the hosts and Freddie behind the camera as the technical producer.  The show follows the crazy things that happen to the group as their show becomes bigger and bigger as they post more web shows and Carly’s crazy brother Spencer.  Spencer is an abstract artist just trying to get a break and along the way he finds himself in some interesting positions and meeting some interesting people.  Together they create a hit web and TV show!

I remember when this show first came on air and everyone was excited because it was a new funny show.  After the first few episodes I was hooked and wanted to watch the show all the time.  As the seasons went on I found myself disappointed because the episodes were no longer funny or creative.  Every new episode was a TV movie and their was no normal regular episodes.  There was also the fact that Miranda Cosgrove was getting older.  Not to be mean or anything but I find her really annoying and not genuine.  Don’t get me wrong I loved her on Drake & Josh but on this show… she seems….. extremely stuck-up.  In the beginning when Freddie would ask her out she would let him down gently but on the later seasons she became more rude to him when he asked her on a date or to a dance.  The lines are meant to be portrayed kinder but the way she says them comes off impolite and that she doesn’t care whether or not his feelings get hurt.  In truth, Spencer is the only character that sometimes gets a giggle out of me but besides that I just sit and watch with an expressionless face.  Sam can be funny on VERY rare occasions but mostly she is just obsessed with food.  Freddie is just kinda there most of the time, sometimes I forget that he is in the scene. :(
Enough about characters and on the plot of the show.  The thing that I do like about this show is that the plot line of show is really original and interesting.  The only problem that this show has is that they can’t come up with entertaining episodes.  It doesn’t matter how amazing your plot is to make it a great show you have to follow an idea with good episodes so people will keep watching.  Again no offense but the writers for this show are lacking in that department.  Overall, this isn’t a great show at all and even though you may get a rogue episode that is watchable and somewhat funny don’t expect it every time you watch.

I personally love this show. My little brother has a obsession over this show because of this I end up watching this show on a regular basis. Not only does my little brother like it but my dad and the rest of my family think that it is a great show. The first couple of seasons were funny and then they went downhill  from there. I will admit I still find them funny but they aren’t as funny as they used to be. I think that the characters are played well but I don’t like Miranda Cosgrove or Carly she just isn’t that funny. I like Spencer and Sam. Alot of the time I find that Sam annoys me because her jokes have been reduced to “I like beef strips and chili”. That is what her response to everything is now, that or some stupid joke about Freddy’s clothes or hair. That also bugs me. I am pretty sure that Freddy has gone through puberty now and is quite attractive no, so they can’t make fun of him really anymore because he dresses really nicely too. Other than that the show is good. I enjoy watching it and it still makes me laugh. They still have good concepts and Spencer, is really the only thing holding the show in my opinion right now. He makes the show. The guest-stars are good too. I was happy when Jane Lynch starred as Sam’s mom it was quite funny.
Now I know that North doesn’t agree with me but the acting is decent and if the producers weren’t trying to aim the show at little kids then the show would be hysterical. There have been comments that are what I deem not Nickelodeon ediquette and belong on a channel more like ABC or something. Thisis what drew me in. I thought that it wasn’t going to be like every other Nick show. It was refreshing, and it still is at points. There are points that I will find myself really laughing hard.
What really gets me is when they advertise these hour long episodes and make it seem like it will tell you all these things and then it’s the most pointless episode ever made and you are disappointed. Thats my only complaint about the show though. Otherwise the show is pretty decent. I think it is a show that will get very many different reviews so its a hit or miss whether you will like it or not.

Every episode, this show follows three contestants in a beauty pageants.  Each episode follows three different contestants, and features a different pageant.  The three kids, usually between the ages of 2-9 (but sometimes younger) are shown from a couple weeks before the pageant to the last day of the pageant.  They are shown preparing to go, getting their ‘beauty’ all ready, and then performing.  The crowning is shown at the end, and then the reactions of the kids and their parents are recorded.

This is the product of a television station with no good ideas and too much time on their hands.  I saw the ads and was shocked about the topic.  It’s like manipulating little girls (and sometimes little boys).  But one day there was nothing on tv and I was bored out of my mind.  So I checked it out.  I didn’t really know whether to laugh or cry.  It was pathetic and scary and somehow kept my attention for an entire hour.
Most of these girls have been brought up in the lap of pageants.  Quite a lot of them are spoiled rotten.  A lot of the parents are horrible parents who either spoil their kids or are super harsh and rude to their kids.  It’s really a sad thing when a little boy goes up on stage to have fun and his mother yells at him and drags him off because he ‘wasn’t doing it right’.  These kids get spray-tanned.  They get fake eyelashes.  They get fake teeth (called ‘flippers’).  They get these fancy dresses costing thousands of dollars.  Manicures, pedicures, hair pieces, lots of makeup.  It’s all fake.  It costs so much money.  It makes girls cry when they don’t win.  It creates a lot of stuck up brats.  I know I’m biased against pageants (I think they’re a waste of time and female intelligence), but pageants for young children?  Like under 10 years old?  That’s so beyond wrong.  Picture a third grader all dolled up with huge curly hair and poofy dresses parading around on stage.  Now picture this little kid dressed up in a short skirt and a belly-top shaking her hips on stage.  Sound like fun?  I don’t know what they’re paying these people to put their kids on tv as pageant girls.  Not enough, that’s for sure.  Some of them probably enjoy having their kids shown in ‘all their glory’, but I find it a little offensive.  And ridiculous and freaky.  I hate this show, but I watch it anyway because…I don’t even know why.  It’s addicting in a strange way.
Bottom line: this show is completely horrible.  I feel so bad for these children.

My sister recently started recording these episodes on Nick@Nite because she was wondering what the show was about.  I was also curious and so I decided to try it.  I absolutely hated this show and dread having to listen to it when my sister is watching it.  All of the jokes are extremely offensive because they are very racial and aren’t even that funny.  The only good part about the show every episode has one or two jokes that make me chuckle but besides that there are really no funny jokes and most times I find myself questioning why this show was put on air at all.  Besides the jokes the acting isn’t good.  All of the characters are completely over-acting and are not believable in the slightest.  All the girls are always pouring themselves over the brother and he isn’t even that attractive and Chris is always talking about hot girls and that is usually the only thing that is ever on his mind.  I am going to stop ranting and say that no one should ever watch this show unless you want to suddenly gain the urge to hit your head against a wall!

I used to think this show was terrible. I watched a few of the episodes and decided that the show as racist and horrible and certainly not something worth watching. Then one morning I woke up and my sister was watching it. Her friend had told her it was really funny. I ignored it that morning. But after dozens of mornings waking up and watching the show, I found I kind of liked it. Though the show does include characters who are racist, the show as a whole is not. It’s the story of a boy’s life. He had to struggle and work through a lot of hard things, but in the end he became successful because he never gave up. That might make it sound cheesy, but it’s not.  The acting is pretty good (sometimes overdone, but it is a comedy) and the voice-over narrator is really funny. He ties the whole show together. Overall, I think it’s a pretty funny show that people should watch if there’s nothing else on. I wouldn’t seek it out, but if it’s on I’ll watch it.

Real Teen Rating~ B : Sure, you should watch this.

Aliens-cyborgs have gone back in time and captured two things: humans and dinosaurs.  The humans are their slaves, the dinos are their trackers (sort of like bloodhounds).  When one of the humans escapes to Earth (which the slaves think of as  ‘heaven’), the dinos and one of the cyborgs follow him to recapture him.  So he flees and meets a prostitute-turned-nun-in-training named Ann, who eventually vows to help him fight off the dinos and cyborgs and keep him on Earth.

This is the best Mystery Science Theater I’ve ever seen.  Hands down.  The movie itself is absolutely terrible.  I don’t even understand it.  The plot is weak, the acting is pretty terrible, and the special effects are especially horrible.  There’s one scene where you can literally see the wire holding up the prop.  It’s pathetic.  The jokes the MST 3000 crew make totally make up for the lack of any decent entertainment material in the actual movie.  I laughed so hard!  This is another Mike episode, and Mike outclasses Joel all the way (in my opinion), so I already had high hopes.  I was not disappointed.  Tom and Crow were very witty the whole time, Mike was great as always, and the skits were very good too.  My favorite skit was actually one that came at the end of the movie, in the theater (where there are never skits).  There were so many amazing comments that I still go around quoting.  And there was even a reference to another MST 3000 episode (Werewolf, anybody?)!  So awesome! That was pretty much my favorite part.  There were a couple…lets say overweight…people in this movie, and the cast jumped all over that.  You couldn’t go five minutes without there being another fat joke pulled by someone.  It sounds insulting, but when you hear them, you can’t not laugh.  The actual movie was a total failure, but the MST 3000 was the best one.  Ever.  If you’re new to MST 3000, start with this one, and you won’t be disappointed.

After digging up strange bones, a man becomes a werewolf.

I know that is a very short gist but it was all I could come up for this movie.  First off, Mystery Science Theater is a show where they take terrible movies and they watch them and during the movie make hilarious comments about what is going on.  Werewolf the movie that they chose to do for this episode was so terrible.  I have seen a lot of Mystery Science Theaters and this one was one of the worst.  I was so confused because all of the characters were randomly turning into werewolves and the main 2 guys looked exactly a-like so you had no clue what was going on.  With bad movies though comes hilarious comments.  This MST3000 was narrated by Mike and some of their comments were so funny that almost everyday my friends and I will quote the movie while walking in the hallways.  In MST3000 throughout the movie they will do little skits and usually they aren’t that funny but there is one song that sing in a skit that is pure genius.  The other great thing about this episode was that not all the jokes were fall on my back im laughing so hard some were just a chuckle or not funny at all and with a show like this not every joke has to be hilarious. If you ever have extra time then you should check out any Mystery Science Theaters but this one is a winner so if you have never watched Mystery Science Theater then pick this one because you won’t be disappointed.

Okay, first of all, the actual movie is about archeologists who, on an archeological dig, find the bones of a dead werewolf. They then proceed to have a horribly unrealistic fist fight where one of the archeologists falls over the bones and scratches himself.  He becomes a werewolf because of this and attacks the innocent by night. So, in short, one of the worst plots ever created. The funny thing is I’m not sure which was worse, the terrible acting or the terrible plot. This makes it the perfect Mystery Science Theater movie. As for the whole package (mystery science theater comments and the movie itself) it was pretty good. The comments made were pretty funny but most weren’t hilarious. A few I still quote when I can slip them into conversation. Of the mystery science theaters I’ve seen this has the best skits, but not the best comments during the movie. Overall, it was an above-average funny Mystery Science Theater but not the funniest of the ones I’ve seen. If you’re in the mood for some giggles (and one of the most predictable endings to a movie ever) pick up this Mystery Science Theater and watch it with some friends – you won’t be disapointed.

The actual movie was so incredibly pathetic it wasn’t funny.  Well ok, it was a little funny.  But the Mystery Science Theater crew completely decimated the movie, and it became hilarious.  Unlike North Star, I usually like the skits they have (unless they’re really lame), and these ones were so so funny.  The song one was definitely the best one I’ve ever seen, and I still go around singing it in school (drawing some very weird looks.)  The comments during the movie were very funny too.  This episode was a Mike episode (as opposed to a Joel episode), and I am learning to like Mike the more I watch him comment on.  Crow and Tom Servo were, as always, so so funny.  They made all these great comments about the main girl, making fun of her accent.  There was also one really funny-but-bad pun that was just perfect.  Puns are amazing.  Gypsy wasn’t in this episode, but then she’s not in many episodes, so it didn’t make a difference at all.  This was a really good episode of MST3000, and I would know, because I’ve seen some terrible episodes.  Great movie (and even series) to watch with friends at a sleepover!

American Idol - FOX

The Gist
American Idol is a reality TV show where normal, every-day people try-out in front of the three infamous judges Jennifer Lopez, Randy Jackson and Steven Tyler to get a chance at becoming the next singing sensation. The first few weeks the judges get to decide who gets to go through and who doesn’t. The weeks following, America gets to do the deciding and vote for who they want to stay on the show. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are the preformance show and the elimination show. Watch and pick your next American Idol.

This is one of my favorite reality TV shows. I always make sure to catch it on tuesdays and wednesdays to vote for my favorite singer. Sometimes I even vote more than once for this person. For example…once when two of my friends were over we watched the show and voted for one guy 1000 times. Literally 1000 times. But that was just us going over-board and being crazy. Most people only vote once or twice. The weirdest part of this show (besides the bad contestants) is the judges. They are each given set roles to fit into. Simon is the bitter, mean yet truthful one. He’s also my favorite judge because he takes the competition seriously and only puts through people who are good enough to make it in the music business. Randy can only be described as a few words “Cool dog!” Because that is basically all he says throughout the whole show: “Dog, that was cool, yo. Don’t change your style, man.” Sometimes he gives good advice, but usually he’s too busy calling everyone “dog” to be of much help to anyone. Last season Paula Abdul played the role of “crazy-woman-who-has-no-idea-what-she’s-doing”. She was purely an annoyance. Whenever I watched the show with my family my dad always had a lot of things to make fun of with her there. She’s probably 5% human, 90% botox, and 5% crazy. Kara is left to play the wise one, who knows oh-so-much about the music industry. Sometimes she can pull it off. Sometimes she can’t. I’ll let you decide whether or not she is a good judge. The italicized text is what I wrote before Simon left, Kara left, Paula left, and Ellen DeGeneres came and then promptly left. Randy stayed and they added on Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler so it wouldn't become the Randy Jackson Show. At the beginning of this latest season I had a sinking feeling that the show was about to crash and burn. But the new judges actually surprised me and are doing well and are pretty funny. Some people have just stopped watching this show because they don't like the thought of new judges. That's how I thought at first too, but I think you should all give it one more chance. Even if you don't like the judges the show at the very least is entertaining. The music is usually great and it’s a lot of fun voting for who you think deserves the title of “American Idol”.

American Idol used to be my favorite reality show to watch… that was until this season.  When this show started out it was amazing!  There was actually a lot of talent and then this show reached its 7th season with the two David’s and went downhill from there.  The next season we gained a judge by the name of Kara Dioguardi and everyone was excited because there was going to be a new judge.  That excitement all died down when everyone realized how annoying she was and how every chance she got tried to steal Paula Abdul’s spotlight.  Luckily we had some talent on that season (Adam Lambert, Kris Allen, and Alexis Grace) but only a few people who were OK.  Then we got Season 9 and I think everyone died on the inside.  First, they got rid of Paula and replaced her with Ellen DeGeneres.  I think that Ellen is really funny but she was really awkward to watch on the show and she seemed like she didn’t belong there.  Second, no offense to the contestants but there was NO TALENT!!  After the first couple of rounds I stopped watching and I never ever do that with a show EVER!!!!  There was no point in watching this season and it became more about the judges than the contestants.  I’m done ranting and there are some good things about this show.  The concept of the show is really cool and we have gotten some impressing singers from this show (Carrie Underwood, David Cook, David Archuleta, Kelly Clarkson and Jordin Sparks).  The other great thing about this show is that it is always fun to have favorites and compete with family and friends as to who will win and whos CD you will buy once the competition is over.  All in all, this show used to be really great and one of the best but recently has gone down hill.  Hopefully Idol will be able to clean themselves up for Season 10.
This grade is based off all the seasons combined together, not just one is particular.
