The Gist
Bliss Cavendar(Ellen Page) does what her mother wants her to do: compete in beauty pageants. She works at a horrible barbeque restaurant and is the complete cliché of a normal bullied teenager. Her life is extremely boring until she goes out shopping and sees an advertisement for an upcoming roller derby. Bliss and her friend Pash (Alia Shawkat) decide to check it out. There they meet the Hurl Scouts, a tough-as-nails roller derby team who hasn’t won a game in years. After a rough game against their top competitors the Holy Rollers, Bliss meets Maggie Mayhem (Kristen Wiig), a member of the Hurl Scouts. Not knowing that Bliss is under 21 years old (the age you have to be over to be in the derby), Mayhem suggests that Bliss tryout for the team. Going behind her parents back, Bliss makes the team and transforms from the helpless Bliss Cavendar to the rough and independent Babe Ruthless. Roller derby becomes her life and everything begins to change for her.

I saw this movie on a long plane ride. Some dialogue may have been lost to the constant roar of the plane’s engine, which happened to be right next to my window (what a great view that was) but I think I heard most of it. I got the gist at least (no pun intended). The movie was pretty good. I kind of got bored during some parts, but not very frequently. I thought anything having to do with the roller derby was really interesting and exciting. The acting was also very good. Ellen Page was great as Bliss and Drew Barrymore was hilarious as the quirky and crazy roller derby champ Smashly Simpson. She could really get you to laugh. The plot was also pretty good. Some things were very predictable, but…when’s the last time you’ve seen a movie about a roller derby? It was a good movie, but not the greatest. Seeing it once was enough.
Real Teen Rating~ B- : Well...I guess you should see this.
