The Gist
Cathy, Chris, Carrie and Cory have not had the greatest lives so far.  Their father has just died and their mother is going to lose the house so they have to move to their grandmothers house.  When they get there they soon learn their grandmother isn’t as perfect as they thought in fact she has confined them to the attic where they cannot make any noise so that the maids below cannot hear and cannot think of sinful things such as the opposite sex in inappropriate ways.  Girls must use the bathroom at separate times then boys and boys and girls cannot sleep in the same bed.  Cathy and Chris find this crazy because Carrie and Cory are twins and cannot live a second without each other but soon they find a way to adapt.  Everyday their mom comes upstairs and tells them that a long time ago she did something very bad and now she must win back her father’s appreciation and the day he dies they can go downstairs and that it shouldn’t be more than a couple of days.  Boy was she wrong.  Now they must survive in the attic and all of its hidden secrets.

What We Think

I picked up this book in the bookstore one day when I was going on a plane and needed something to read.  When I brought it home my mom was very surprised I was reading it in saying that she read this book when she was in high school and that I would really like it, and I did.  I’m going to warn you right now if you don’t like books that get into detail about some interesting topic then I wouldn’t recommend it because it gets into a lot of detail about subjects.  Detail is the thing that I really enjoyed about this book and V.C Andrews does a great job of describing every little detail of the attic and what goes on each day and when you reach the end of the book you realize that from the beginning she was planning this book because of the little things that are added and you don’t notice until the end.  Because of all the detail she puts in you really get to learn a lot about the characters and what they are thinking and although some go down some bad paths you want to steer them down the right ones.  Overall this was a great book for both genders and is definitely a page turner.  I highly recommend it to anyone although you probably should be in high school because of some of the content.
