What We Think

My family and I watched this one night over vacation because we needed a movie.  Five minutes into it, my mom was questioning our choice.  The beginning is very…dirty… and not in the funny way.  In the oh-my-god-what-did-he-just-say way.  After the first ten minutes or so it started to get better though, and my mom didn’t end up shutting it off.
The plot of this movie is a pretty interesting concept, and it made me think.  In this movie, it wasn’t just not lying, it was like what you were thinking came out of your mouth, with no off switch.  So if a someone walked by you thought was cute, you’d tell them you thought you were cute.  Without meaning to.  Without wanting to.  It would just happen.  I know wouldn’t want to be spilling secrets or private opinions to anyone and everyone, would you?  Yea I didn’t think so.
The movie was kind of funny, but was more deep than funny, in my opinion.  There were some interesting digs at religion and Jesus and God, which was amusing to me.  There were a few funny ‘truthful’ comments, but it really wasn’t a laugh out loud funny movie.  Also, some of the jokes, like making fun of Mark’s weight, got SO old SO fast.  It’s like, we get it he’s a chunk!  Get over it!  One part that really annoyed me was that everyone married for future success and baby attractiveness, not love.  Anna (played by Garner) is Mark’s love interest, and for the whole movie she’s all ‘I can’t marry you we’ll have pudgy snub nosed babies’.  Even though she loves him.  Get real people.  I was satisfied with the ending though, so I guess all’s well that ends well.  And I almost cried, which always makes it a not bad movie in my book (with the exception of Click, I didn’t like that movie).
Ricky Gervais was, as always, a great actor in this movie.  He was pretty much the best part.  Jennifer Garner was pretty good in her role, and Rob Lowe played a good supporting actor in the form of Mark’s snobby, succesful rival in movie script writing. (Movies, by the way, were all completely true and were basically ‘actors’ telling stories of what happened in history.  SNORE.)  Jonah Hill had a smaller supporting role, but he was quite good in it.

I’d seen bits and pieces of this movie for a long time. I’d be flipping through the HBO chanels and catch a glimpse ever now and then of this movie. What I gathered from those scences was that it was weird yet interesting. Just a few weeks ago I watched the entire thing from the beginning. Finally. Yay. It honestly wasn’t much different than what I’d got from watching the snipits. The best part about the movie is the idea of it. An alternate universe where no one can lie. Hard to imagine, right? That’s the thing I really liked about the movie: it’s absurdity. The actual plot was a little weird. He was a screen writer who could only write about past events. And he was in love with Anna who was mean and really harsh. And then he made up God and all that…really weird. So the plot was okay if a little funky. I thought the script was pretty good. Nothing special but not bad either. The acting,  I think was the best part of the movie. Ricky Gervais was pretty funny and played his part well. Jennifer Garner was also really good at playing the role. Even though I disliked her character I knew that meant she was playing the part exactly right. Overall I though it was an average movie that you should watch if it happens to be on TV and you have nothing to watch. You know those kinds of movies. Ones that aren’t really memorable but kinda cute and/or funny while you’re watching them. Yeah. That’s what this was. I can’t imagine watching it again though. It was get old fast. But all in all, the first time I thought it wasn’t that bad.
