John Tyree is a guy who’s run into a little trouble in his life.  When he was little his mom left, all his dad does and talks about is coins and one day when John blows up at him that he doesn’t want to hear about coins anymore him and his father stop speaking.  John then gets in trouble with drugs and after high school he enlists in the army instead of going to college.  On one of his leaves John goes to visit his dad and meets the girl of his dreams named Savannah.  He only has two weeks to spend with her and that’s enough for them to discover that they are meant for each other.  While on his tour they write letters to each other, when John is almost done with his tour and then there comes the day of 9/11.  John re-enlists into the army and Savannah can’t handle him being away so she writes him a letter that changes both of their lives forever.

What We Think

I recently read Dear John when I got it as a gift.  I couldn’t wait to read it because I was excited to see the movie and from page one I was drawn into the book.  I was attached to John instantly and it was as if he was my best friend and that I wanted nothing bad to happen to him.  I have to warn you before you read this book you must understand that it is very depressing although the commercials for the movie trick you it is quite depressing and it teaches you the true meaning of true love.  While reading this book I cried twice and I don’t think I have ever done that with a book before.  The ending is definitely surprising and although I was sad for one of the characters it felt right as if everything happened for a reason.  Nicholas Sparks is known for his depressing books (The Notebook, A Walk to Remember and Message in a Bottle) and this is no exception.  There are also very happy parts in this book it’s not all depressing and sad but I think that everyone who believes in true love or someone who doesn’t believe it exists needs to read this book because it proves to you that true love isn’t always at first sight and this book has such a believable story that it could happen to anyone.  In short, everyone (even guys) need to read this book.  Counting down the days to the movie!!!!! Comes out this Friday!!!!  :)
