The Gist
There’s no other way to say it: Aza is the one ugly in a kingdom of beauties. And she knows it. Everywhere she goes people point, stare, laugh, giggle, yell cruel things at her. Because of this, whenever she she’s going to go out in public she holds her hand in front of her face in a desperate attempt to hide the ugly. This hardly ever works. Fortunately for her, her singing voice is beyond compare and having a good voice in her kingdom is vital. So when a duchess comes to her parent’s inn in need of an escort to the kingdom’s capital, she picks Aza to go along with her. Though the castle royals aren’t much different from anyone else when it comes to their reaction to her, they welcome her and try to treat her like an equal. But when the new queen sees her, and then hears her sing, she creates plan to use Aza’s voice for her own benefit. Queen Ivi promotes her to a lady-in-waiting and gives her new clothes, the title of a lady, and land for her parents inn. All just to get Aza to do what she wants. The queen would stop at nothing to be the fairest, and she won’t let anything, or anyone, stand in her way. Aza has to choose between doing what is right and doing what she knows is wrong. She must decide to either tell everyone what Ivi is doing, and face the consequences, or to keep quiet and live with the guilt of lying to everyone and everything she loves.

What We Think

I wasn’t exactly sure how to describe this book, so I don’t think I really did it justice. If the gist of this book didn’t really appeal to you, I would advise that you check the book out anyways. It’s worth reading, even if it doesn’t seem like it is. Here’s something you would never have been able to guess from the gist: it’s basically a retelling of the story Snow White. Not a fairytale retelling you hear of everyday. It was unique. The only reason I read it in the first place was because I liked other books by this author. I found this book really interesting once I started reading. The writing wasn’t the best that I’ve ever read, but it was pretty good. Then, there’s always the important matter of a good plot line. Thankfully, this book had a very unique story to it. Not only that, but, the characters were well-developed. The author made me hate some and love others. The only problem with this book is that it’s an easy read. It’s really not meant for teens at all. In fact, I think the reading level was 11-12 years old. But, every once in a while it’s okay to read an easy book, especially if it has a good story line, like this one does. So, unless you flatly refuse to read anything that is slightly easier than your normal reading level, you should read this book. All will enjoy it, singers will love it. All in all: worth the time I spent reading it.
